Panelist - Allan J. Vartelas
Managing Director, Private Equity Group, Aetna, Inc.

Allan Vartelas is a Managing Director of the Private Equity Group of Aetna, Inc. The Private Equity Group currently manages a portfolio of $1 Billion in direct private equity and fund investments for Aetna and its Employee Pension Plan. Since its 1993 inception the Private Equity Group has committed over $1.8 Billion in 55 private equity funds and 38 direct equity transactions. Mr. Vartelas serves on the Advisory Boards on numerous private equity partnerships and is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Prestolite Electric Holdings, Inc.

Mr. Vartelas joined Aetna's Investment Group in 1985. Prior to the formation of the Private Equity Group in 1993, he held various positions within the investment group including management of problem loan, restructuring and bankruptcy situations (1985-1988) and origination of private placement fixed income investments (1989-1992).

Mr. Vartelas is a 1980 graduate of the University of Connecticut. He was with Arthur Andersen & Co. until 1983 obtaining a CPA designation in 1982. He received his MBA degree in 1985 from the Darden Graduate Business School of the University of Virginia.
