Daniel A. D’Aniello is a Founding Partner and Managing Director of The Carlyle Group. He is based in Washington, DC.

Prior to forming Carlyle in 1987, Mr. D’Aniello was Vice President for Finance and Development at Marriott Corporation where he was responsible for valuation of all major mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, debt and equity offerings, and project financings. Before joining Marriott, he was a financial officer at Pepsico and TWA.

Mr. D'Aniello is a 1968 magna cum laude graduate of Syracuse University, where he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, and a 1974 graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he was a Teagle Foundation Fellow.



Scott A. Schoen is Co-President of Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P.

Mr. Schoen joined Thomas H. Lee Partners in 1986. Prior to that time he was in the private finance department of Goldman, Sachs & Co. He received a BA in history from Yale University, a JD from Harvard Law School and an MBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.

Mr. Schoen’s current and former corporate board directorships include VNU Inc.; Spectrum Brands, Inc.; Simmons Bedding Company; Transwestern Publishing, LP; Axis Specialty Ltd.; and Rayovac Corporation; among others. Mr. Schoen is a trustee of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Network, a member of the board of advisors of the Yale School of Management, and a member of the Yale Development Board.



Robert Friedman, a Senior Managing Director, is the Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Legal Officer of The Blackstone Group. On joining Blackstone in 1999, Mr. Friedman worked primarily in Blackstone’s Private Equity group and also participated in the work of the Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory group. He became Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Legal Officer in early 2003 and continues to participate in the work of the Private Equity group and the Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory group. Before joining Blackstone, Mr. Friedman had been a partner with Simpson Thacher & Bartlett for 25 years, where he was a senior member of that law firm’s mergers and acquisitions practice. At Simpson Thacher, Mr. Friedman advised The Blackstone Group ever since the firm was founded in 1985.

Mr. Friedman graduated from Columbia College and received a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He currently serves as a Director of Axis Capital Holdings Limited, Houghton Mifflin Holdings, Inc., Northwest Airlines, Inc., and TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. Mr. Friedman is Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Institute for Law and Economics of the University of Pennsylvania, a member of the Board of Visitors of Columbia College, and a Trustee of Chess-in-the-Schools and New Alternatives for Children, two charitable organizations with programs for disadvantaged youth in New York City.



Mike Goss is a Managing Director and serves as the Chief Operating Officer of Bain Capital. Mr. Goss joined Bain Capital in 2001 as Managing Director and CFO. Prior to joining Bain Capital, Mr. Goss was EVP and CFO of Digitas Inc., a rapidly growing, worldwide Internet professional services firm which he helped take public in March 2000. Prior to Digitas Inc., Mr. Goss was EVP, CFO, and a member of the board of directors of Playtex Products, Inc. Mr. Goss was a Senior Associate at Bain Capital from 1987 to 1989. Mr. Goss graduated from Kansas State University in 1981 with a BS in economics and received an MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School in 1986.



Dan Primack is Editor-At-Large with Thomson Financial, publisher of Buyouts Magazine, Private Equity Week and Venture Capital Journal. He also is the creator and editorial voice of both peHUB.com and the PE Week Wire, a daily email publication read by over 34,000 subscribers. Primack's daily column has become mandatory private market reading, and he has given keynote addresses at events hosted by organizations that include Merrill Lynch, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the National Venture Capital Association. He also appears regularly on CNBC, and has been quoted in such publications as BusinessWeek and TheStreet.com. Prior to hitting the private equity beat in 2000, Primack covered private debt for Private Placement Letter and served as Editor and Cofounder of The 'Bury, a Roxbury, Mass.-based newspaper catering to teenagers and young adults. Primack is a graduate of Haverford College, with a degree in political science. He would like to thank his wife, his once-trusty Pontiac and the Great Pumpkin.


Joel Podolny is the Dean of the Yale School of Management. His research is in the areas of economic sociology, complex organizations, and social networks. The research for which he is best known is that in which he brings the sociological conception of status to the study of market competition. He has examined status dynamics in a variety of industries, including investment banking, semiconductors, shipping, venture capital, and the wine trade. In addition to his work on status, he has conducted research on the role of social networks in mobility and information transfer within organizations. His current research seeks to explicate how leaders infuse meanings into their organizations.

Prior to Yale SOM, Podolny was professor and director of research at Harvard Business School and professor of sociology in the Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He also spent 11 years on the faculty of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he also served as senior associate dean of academic affairs and was head of the school's organizational behavior group.

Russell Pinilis is a partner in O'Melveny & Myers' New York office and a member of the Business Tax Practice group. Russ’s practice includes domestic and international business tax matters, focusing on the tax aspects of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, private equity fund formations, financing transactions and executive compensation. Russ regularly represents private equity funds in leveraged acquisitions. His recent experience includes representing private equity funds managed by Apollo Management in their leveraged buyout of Borden Chemical Inc., and by JPMorgan Partners in their acquisition of Pinnacle Foods, Inc. He also recently represented UAP Holding Corp. in its initial public offering; Otelco, Inc. in its issuance of income depository securities; SkyTerra Communications in its joint venture with DirecTV, Inc. to operate the Hughes Network Systems business; Honda in its joint venture with General Electric to develop aircraft engines; and senior management of American Tire Distributors in its acquisition by Investcorp.



John O’Neill is the Americas Director of Private Equity at Ernst & Young. Throughout his 26 year career, he has advised many large and medium size private equity firms in the areas of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, leveraged buyouts, bankruptcy, debt workout, cross-border transactions, with a focus on the retail and distribution, consumer products, and manufacturing industries.

John is a member of the Private Equity Leadership Network (PELN), sponsored by Ernst & Young. The PELN is a select group of general partners drawn from some of the largest buyout-focused private equity firms based in the United States.

John has a B.S. in Accounting from Fairfield University and an M.B.A. in Taxation from the Iona Graduate School of Business. He is the author of the chapter “Tax Aspects of Bankruptcy Sales and Acquisitions” in the treatise, ¬Bankruptcy Business Acquisitions (Lex Med Publishing, 1999). He serves as Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Charles F. Dolan School of Business at Fairfield University and Treasurer/Board member of the Ackerman Institute for the Family.
